There are inquiries from clients who want braces done only on one jaw. From my experience, only 1 out of 10 braces patients qualify for one-jaw braces. A determination of braces being placed on one jaw or both jaws. Is based on an individual’s orthodontic needs and specific alignment problems

Keep in mind that our jaws move in synchrony, the movement of one jaw will influence the movement of the other jaw.

Most orthodontic treatment involves addressing the misalignment of the upper and lower jaws to achieve a balanced and harmonious bite.

Scenarios where braces should be done on one or both jaws:

One jaw case:
  1. Mild alignment issues: If a person has minor crowding or spacing concerns on just one jaw, braces on that particular jaw alone may be sufficient to correct the problem.
  2. Significant alignment issues on one jaw: If there are severe misalignments or structural problems, braces may be applied to that jaw first to address the important issues. However, it’s common to eventually address the other jaw to achieve a proper bite and optimal alignment.
Both jaws case:
  1. A malocclusion problem such as an overbite, underbite, or crossbite often requires braces on both jaws to correct the bite and create an aesthetic and functional result.
  2. Comprehensive orthodontic treatment: Involves treating both upper and lower jaws to achieve the best results and long-term stability.

Individual orthodontic needs determine whether one jaw or both jaws should be treated with braces. An orthodontist will conduct a thorough examination, take X-rays, and create a treatment plan tailored to the patient’s unique situation.
