BLEEDING GUMS

Did you know that 90% of the population experience bleeding gums, especially when brushing their teeth?

WHAT CAUSES BLEEDING GUMS?

GUM DISEASE

The commonest cause of bleeding gums is gingivitis. Gingivitis is caused by dental plaque. Dental plaque is a thin film of bacteria that can sometimes coat the gum line. This coupled with food remnants owing to poor oral hygiene habits, when this film and the minute food remnant sit on the gum, it causes inflammation of the gum. Gingivitis presents as puffiness, redness, and swelling of the gum. The gum is also easily irritable and bleeds easily.

When left for a long time, this plaque hardens owing to some bacteria activities to form Tartar (dental calculus), which is harder and causes more bleeding. This calculus is indicative of periodontitis.

IMPROPER ORAL HYGIENE TECHNIQUES

Improper oral hygiene techniques can actually be detrimental.

Aggressively brushing your teeth, or improper flossing techniques can end up injuring the gum and causing it to bleed.

PREGNANCY

Inflammation of the gum is common during pregnancy due to hormonal changes. Sometimes pregnant women experience localized swellings known as gingival epulis. Dental visits should be scheduled during pregnancy.

MEDICATION

Some medications can cause bleeding or increase the risk of bleeding gums. Medications such as NSAID (anti-inflammatory drugs), birth control pills, and blood thinners. These drugs will increase the risk of bleeding gums.

VITAMIN DEFICIENCY

Some Vitamin deficiencies such as Vitamin C and Vitamin K deficiency can cause bleeding gums. These Vitamins can naturally be found in fruits and vegetables.

BLOOD DISORDERS.

Some blood disorders and cancers of the blood will cause gums to bleed.

ILL-FITTING DENTURES/ DENTAL FILLINGS

Dental procedures that leave dental materials on the gum line can cause bleeding, due to irritation of the gum. Ill-fitting dentures can also cause bleeding gums
